Matters Of The Heart: The Cardiovascular Complications Of Eating Disorders
Presenter: Joel Jahraus, MD, FAED, CEDS, Chief Medical Officer - Monte Nido & Affiliates
This presentation will review the latest findings in regard to the etiology and impact of these cardiovascular changes and review newer information regarding potential long-term implications.
Eating disorder clients can manifest profound changes in cardiovascular physiology, anatomy, and function. The impact of these changes range from mild to life-threatening. Most of the impact is on individuals with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) but Bulimia Nervosa (BN), and Binge Eating Disorder (BED) and have associated cardiovascular side effects as well. In addition, there are differences between impaired cardiovascular function in adolescents versus adults.
Learning Objectives
- Name at least two cardiovascular physiological, anatomical and functional changes related to various levels of severity in each of the major eating disorder diagnoses: (Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, and Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder).
- Explain the short-term and long-term risks involved with these changes.
- Identify at least one appropriate cardiovascular testing for these complications.
