Letter from the Board

Dear Colleagues,

It’s hard to believe that we’re one quarter of 2013 is already behind us. I want to thank you for your support and that of the existing board and committee members that dedicate so much time to our Chapter.

At March's meeting, we presented the CAMFT 2013 Outstanding Chapter Leader for Sacramento Valley Chapter award to Heather Blessing, our Newsletter Editor.  It is important to note that our chapter could not exist without all of the volunteers and the time they devote to bring trainings, resources and valuable information to you that only a local chapter could.

Spring is a time of renewal, a time when new opportunities present themselves and new relationships form. We are be- ginning to rise from our winter hibernation and start the season of rejuvenation. Below is an email from Shawn Talbot, one of the finest people from CAMFT who work with us. While it is theoretically late for the May conference I highly recommend that you consider participating in either of both of these events.

From Shawn: Hello! If there are Sacramento Valley Chapter speakers who you feel would make dynamic presenters for the CAMFT 2013 Fall Symposium and/or 2014 Annual Conference, please encourage them to submit a peer presenter proposal! The link is below. Also, if members of your chapter have written articles that pertain to upcoming topics for The Therapist magazine (please see below), please encourage them to submit an article! If space permits, we hope you will consider posting the editorial calendar information below in an upcoming newsletter.

Here’s to new beginning of a new existence and a new season.  See you soon and don’t forget that Jill Epstein will be at your next meeting on the 19th.  See you there.

Sincerely yours,

Chad Thompson

Legal Beagle

dectective.pngWelcome to the section of the SVC-CAMFT newsletter, Legal Beagle written by Darlene Davis, LMFT. The chapter thought it would be helpful to keep you updated on new laws, legislative pursuits or actions, as well as ongoing legal and ethical dilemmas we all face in our career as Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists, Interns, and Trainees. Please feel free to ask questions that you have and I will do my best to investigate and post your answer in the newsletter. Please note that articles are based on information from CAMFT and/or the BBS and have been researched to the best of my ability. This is not meant to be legal advice.  Please contact CAMFT or Board of Behavioral Sciences for any legal matters you need assistance for.

There have been several legislative updates that affect most of us beginning April 1, 2013. I have listed them below. Please visit www.bbs.ca.gov for more information.

Advertisements for licensees or registrants of the BBS must contain:

o   Your full name, as filed with the Board; and

o   Your license or registration number;

o   Your complete title, or an abbreviation deemed acceptable by the Board.

o   Registered interns or associates must also include the name of your employer or the name of the entity for which you volunteer.

o   Registered interns must also include that you are supervised by a licensed person

You may use the term “Psychotherapy” or “Psychotherapist” as long as your advertisement contains all the information required by law, as listed above.

Reference to academic credentials is permitted in your advertisement as long as your degree is earned (not an honorary degree or conferred without actual study) and representations and statements made about your degree are not misleading.

See http://www.bbs.ca.gov/pdf/publications/advertising.pdf for Fact Sheet

Additional CE Requirement for LPCC's:

Effective April 1, 2013, licensed professional clinical counselors must take a one-time, seven hour continuing education course covering the assessment and treatment of people living with HIV and AIDS, as part of the 36 hour continuing education coursework requirement.

You must take this course in your first renewal period after the effective date of this regulation

If you have previously taken an HIV or AIDS course that meets the requirements of this regulation, or have equivalent teaching or practice experience, you may submit proof of this to the Board, upon request, in lieu of taking the course. However, this equivalent coursework or experience will not count toward your required 36 hours of continuing education.

Additional requirement for LCSW supervisors:

Effective April 1, 2013, a person supervising an associate clinical social worker must have been licensed in California or another state for at least two years prior to beginning any supervision.

  March Presentation Summary

Turning Tragedy into Triumph, Metahabilitation; A Contemporary Model of Rehabilitation
by Joyce Mikal-Flynn, EdD, MSN, RN, FNP

Joyce Mikal-Flynn gave a powerful presentation on what she terms as "Metahabilitation".  That is, not only rehabilitating but becoming better than before the crisis or event.  It does not mean that the person gets back all of their abilities that they once lost, that may or may not happen, it means that they became a better person after the crisis or event.  She knows of metahabilitation personally as she experienced a heart attack at the age of 35 that required her to have CPR for 22 minutes.  She had brain damage and other challenges to overcome.  As she struggled and found her way back, she found herself wanting to know more about people who overcame the challenges of crises and events.

Through her research and her experiences she noticed 6 stages that people who had been through similar events went through.

Stage 1 - Survival: Acute Recovery - this is the first stage.  This is where the person must become stabilized physically.  This would include surgeries to stabilize them, or healing to the point that they can comprehend what has happened.

Stage 2 - Turning Point - Saying Yes to Life.  This is the point that despite the losses and challenges the person has endured that something inside of them clicks and instead of not wanting to go on, they instead choose to survive and move forward.

Stage 3 - Treatments: Conventional and Complementary.  Now that they have chosen to move forward, they start to figure out what they will need to do to continue to heal to the best of their ability.  They will work with their family, doctors and support systems to find what options are available to them determine what they want to pursue.

Stage 4 - Acceptance and Adaptation: A time to reflect.  They now have an idea of what to expect as far as limitations and abilities and work to accept the changes in their life and move to find ways to adapt to their new life.

Stage 5 - Reintegration: Returning to life.  The person has figured out how to adapt the best they can and take on the challenge to return to life.  There is a shift from focusing on healing to focusing on living.

Stage 6 - Metahibilitation: taking on the future.  At this point the person may have returned to their normal life or their new life and found there is something more they want to do.  They may want to help others, or realize they previously were not spending the time they should have with their family.  They decide to take this crisis or event and not only survive it but to become better because of it.

After her presentation, Dr. Mikal-Flynn facilitated a wonderful discussion on the topic and gave suggestions on how to integrate this into our practices.

Topic: Introduction to Emotionally Focused Therapy

Jennifer Olden, MFT, certified EFT therapist and supervisor will present a workshop on Emotionally Focused Therapy. You will learn how this highly researched, effective, and evidence-based treatment focuses on the emotional bond between partners, presuming that most relational problems arise from a disruption in this bond. You will discover that EFT can help partners learn not only to be more open and trusting with each other, but also to reach out for one another more effectively.

In this presentation, you will have a chance to practice interventions, understand the philosophical underpinnings of this very effective model, and view video clips which illustrate the negative cycles that disrupt the emotional bond.

Jennifer has studied extensively with Rebecca Jorgensen, EFT trainer and Lorrie Brubacher, EFT trainer. She has assisted Rebecca Jorgensen in several Core Skills modules. She specializes in couples and uses the EFT model exclusively. She teaches a class on EFT and provides one-to-one supervision for those who are studying the model. Currently, Jennifer and Nancy and Paul Aikin are building a community of EFT therapists to educate the public on the efficacy of the model and provide support and resources for EFT therapists.

Special Feature
Part 2 of 3
The Quest for Peace….and happiness~
Juli Alvarado, MA, LPC, NCC

You

are

not

your

past.

You are not a reenactment of a past experience.

You are only here NOW.

The past comes back to you only if you invite it through your thoughts, and the future become a worrisome experience only if you invite it to through your thoughts. You do that to yourself. You choose to feel bad. (Most of us do this in a state of sleep, not yet awakened to a mindful life)

There is nobody in your head creating those thoughts that make you feel bad, except you.

You get to choose what you think, you get to choose what you feel, and you get to choose what you attract to you by what you put out into the universe through your thoughts, feelings and actions.

If you talk about how miserable you have been, you will be miserable!

If you talk about how bad someone was to you, you feel bad!

If you continue to blame anyone for anything you will continue to be the victim!

TAKE YOUR LIFE BACK, NOW!

If you need to talk about how bad you feel, find a confidant, a coach, a trusted source and talk about it and be done. If you find you are stuck in the negative cycle, find someone to help you out of that cycle.

The first step is figuring out why you continue to need to feel bad. That is a hard one to hear and the comment that most often brings anger from others; but think about it.

If you didn't need to feel bad, you wouldn't.  You, and YOU alone decide what something means to you and how you are going to respond to it. You decide to feel bad about something, or to move away from it.

When we get out of our past, and stay away from the future, we have energy to choose what to do with this moment, right NOW. And NOW you can choose to do whatever you choose to do.

Your life on earth is being created right now as you read, feel, think and visualize. What you do in this moment will create the outcome of the next moment.

What you do with today, will create your tomorrow.

Days can seem so long, but years vanish before our eyes. Be conscious about your day, your hour, and your moments.

The purpose of your work in this life, of using your personal power to create you in any given moment of time, is first to serve others so that you may be served. Working in the field of therapy or healing is a service to others; you and I are called to serve.

Psyched about Books and Movies
Welcome to "Psyched about Books and Movies!"  Each month we include a book or movie review by one of our readers.  Please see below guidelines on submitting a review.  Happy reading!

Title:  Turning Tragedy into Triumph

Author: Joyce Mikal-Flynn, ED.D., RN, FNP, MSN

Date Released:  2012

Reviewer:  Heather Blessing, MFT Intern

Review:  This is an inspiring book that also gives suggestions on how to support a client who has gone through a life changing crisis, trauma or event.  Dr. Mikal-Flynn describes each of the 6 stages with an account from a person who went through one of these life changing events.  Each account shares a very different event and how the person managed not to just come back from it, but to become better because of it.  A great quick and easy read that normalize the stages a survivor goes through in order to come back better than before.
