In this workshop, attendees will learn the fundamentals of TEAM-CBT, a form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy that emphasizes Testing, Empathy, and Assessment of Resistance. Participants will acquire specific techniques for managing challenging interactions and tools for addressing and overcoming resistance in therapy. Through this training, attendees will deepen their understanding of the psychotherapeutic process and be able to identify and effectively work with the two main types of resistance encountered in psychotherapy
Presentation Goals
Mental Health Professionals will improve their clinical skills and become familiar with the overall structure and main components in TEAM-CBT with a focus on the role of Testing, Empathy (deepening rapport and repairing ruptures), and Assessing Motivation (dealing with resistance).
Learning Objectives
- Learn 5 tools that can be used to repair ruptures and improve therapeutic relationships.
- Identify the two main types of therapeutic resistance.
- Gain proficiency in using one powerful tool to increase motivation and melt resistance while honoring the client - to improve collaboration and engagement in therapy.
About the Presenter
Leigh Harrington, M.D., M.P.H., M.H.S.A, is a psychiatrist, psychotherapist, trainer and coach. Dr. Harrington completed her residency training at Stanford University Medical Center where she was Chief Resident, awarded Resident of the Year for her dedication to the residency program, and trained closely with Dr. David Burns. She studied public health and medical administration, receiving her Masters of Public Health and Masters of Health Services Administration from the University of Michigan. In addition to her private practice, where she specializes in helping individuals overcome their fears - especially social anxiety, develop empowering habits, strengthen relationships and live their fullest lives, she works as a psychiatrist at Yolo County where she served as Medical Director for five years. She is a Level 5 Certified Master TEAM Therapist and Trainer. She has led training groups in TEAM-CBT since 2009, in-person, and for professionals from around the world via Zoom and live presentations. She is the founder of TEAMTherapyTraining.com, has created her own courses and continues to develop courses for therapists, business professionals, and individuals that focus on interpersonal skills, personal empowerment through conquering fears, and mastering the implementation of desired habits and the habit of self-belief.
She has been on the faculty of All Things CBT and served as Volunteer Clinical Faculty at the University of California, Davis where she has taught CBT and TEAM-CBT since 2010.
Dr. Harrington has been an invited guest speaker in various international training groups, especially sought after for her work in interpersonal exposure for social anxiety, shame attacking, habits, relationships and business applications.
When she is not helping individuals and business people increase their sense of freedom, personal empowerment and accomplishment, she can be found delighting in her two young, energetic daughters, hiking, jogging, throwing pottery, writing poetry, enjoying nature, finding meaning in life, and connecting with those who are dear to her.
Target Audience
This program will benefit LMFT, LPCC, LEP, and LCSW licensees and pre-licensees.
This course meets the qualifications for 3 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. The Sacramento Valley Chapter of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (SVC-CAMFT), provider #62279, is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT) to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and LEPs. SVC-CAMFT maintains responsibility for this program/course and all its content.
CE credit will be awarded via email after the completion of the course in exchange for a course evaluation. No CE credits will be awarded to persons arriving late or leaving early. Partial CE credit will not be awarded.
