This program will benefit MFT and LCSW licensees and pre licensees by meeting the qualifications for 6 (for each day)  hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.  Sacramento Valley Chapter of California Marriage and Family Therapist CAMFT CEPA CE Provider #62279 CE Credit will be awarded via email to participants after the completion of the course.
No CEs will be awarded to persons arriving late or leaving early. Partial CE credit will not be awarded.

Workshop Information:

Complies with 6 hour Law and Ethics requirements for Continuing Education required by BBS.  The two-day course complies with the BBS 12-hour course requirement to be eligible to retake the CA law and ethics exam.  This is not an exam prep class.
Choice of 6 hours by coming to FRIDAY ONLY CLASS or SATURDAY ONLY CLASS or 12 hours by coming to BOTH DAYS.

Overview:

This training is meant to allow flexibility in attending one day or both days - Each day offers it's own teaming objectives so choose what is important to you!

Day 1 (Friday) - The Psychotherapist as a Creator of Outcomes!:

David Jensen, J.D., will stress the importance of the psychotherapist's role as a creator of legal and ethical outcomes, whether for good or for ill. In particular, he will instruct attendees on the
ten fundamentals of practicing legally, ethically, safely, and confidently. This course will also
cover the important subjects of patients who are dangerous to third parties, and provide attendees with an overview of the BBS administrative hearing process.

Learning Objectives:

1. Recognize the importance of the psychotherapist's role and their effect on good or bad legal and ethical outcomes.

2. Identify the four fundamentals of practicing legally, ethically, safely and confidently.

3. Recognize the differences between the duty to warn, the duty to protect, and the duty to report.

4. Summarize the BBS administrative hearing process as it applies to therapy.


Day 2 (Saturday) - Navigating Ethics Through the Lens of a Therapeutic Relationship:
Darlene Davis, LMFT, LPCC will go through ethical guidelines that interns are expected to know for the BBS Law and Ethics Exam. We will discuss strategies on how to retain the information and apply it to the examination process. We will use scenarios and small group activities that will expand comprehension of the AAMFT, CAMFT, and ACA, Ethical Guidelines.

Learning Objectives:
1. Recognize psychotherapist role in professional competence as it pertains to ethical responsibilities.

2. Address psychotherapist therapeutic relationship and how ethical expectations and ethical boundaries keep clients safe from harm.

3. Increase knowledge of addressing safety or crisis situations.

4. Identify responsibilities of confidentiality issues as it pertains to ethical responsibilities.

5. Discuss diversity factors in the therapeutic relationship.

6. Increase awareness of keeping client autonomy as a focus of treatment goals.

7. Understand the exam process and how to make the most of knowledge gained.

Presenter Bios:
Dave Jensen, J.D. has been a staff attorney with CAMFT consulting with members regarding their legal and ethical dilemmas and obligations since April 2002.  He earned his Bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University, a law degree from Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego, and a Master's degree in Liberal Studies from Fort Hayes State University in Hays, Kansas.  Dave is a regular contributor to The Therapist magazine and has presented numerous law and ethics presentations including "The Psychotherapist as a Creator of Outcomes* Hopefully, Legal and Ethical Ones", "Avoiding Unprofessional Conduct", "Fun with Subpoenas!", and "Thank You for Supervising Legally and Ethically!"

Darlene Davis, LMFT, LPCC is the executive director for HOPE Counseling Center where she supervises trainees and interns.  She has been teaching masters level students in counseling for over 12 years and loves guiding clinicians through the legal and ethical issues they may experience.  She is known as "the one to go to" in the Sacramento area for law and ethics information and writes the Legal Beagle quarterly article for SVC-CAMFT's newsletter.  She is currently serving on the CAMFT ethics committee and is a CAMFT certified supervisor.  She is an expert consultant for the BBS and has a successful private practice where she serves individuals, couples and families.

Cancellations received more than 7 days prior to an event may be subject to an administrative fee to cover costs of the initial transaction.  No shows, failure to attend, and cancellations 7 or fewer days prior to an event for any reason are non-refundable, including registrations received fewer than 7 days prior to an event.
