Letter from SVC-CAMFT

March 2, 2020

Dear {Contact_FullName},

It’s time to VOTE! Not only is tomorrow, Tuesday, March 3, 2020, Super Tuesday, but CAMFT is also holding elections. The 2020 CAMFT Board Elections and Bylaws Vote ballots must be received by March 19, 2020. If this is news to you and you haven’t received your ballots, please contact member services at infocenter@camft.org. Our voices matter. I encourage you to speak up and vote.

On February 21-22, 2020, five of our board members attended the CAMFT Leadership Conference in Millbrae, CA. The weekend was filled with workshops on governing chapter boards effectively, building volunteer engagement, diversity and inclusion and CEU provider compliance. During the conference CAMFT updated chapter leaders on how CAMFT is advocating on the behalf of all Marriage and Family Therapists on both the federal and state level. Our very own Treasurer, Merret Sheridan, was nominated and received an award for her outstanding chapter leadership. In the midst of all the learning, we walked away with the charge to create more moments for fun and engagement within our chapters.

Looking ahead there are so many upcoming events and firsts for SVC-CAMFT. In two days, we will host our third annual Job Fair. On March 7, 2020, the board will have its annual retreat and board meeting at Rancho Cordova City Hall. The board meeting starts at 2pm and is open to all members. March 21, 2020 some of us therapists are getting together for a hike to connect with each other and nature. More information to come.

Next month BBS will present during our 3000 Club workshop on April 3, 2020 at 8:30a and after that, we will have our breakfast workshop Let's Talk About Sex by Kris Coffman.  On Wednesday, April 8, 2020, SVC-CAMFT will host our first evening workshop complete with a catered sandwich meal and 2 continuing education units. Saturday, May 2, 2020 at William Land Park, SVC-CAMFT will walk in the 2020 NAMI Walk. Our goal is to raise $2,000.00. You may be a sponsor, individual walker, virtual walker or walk day volunteer. Either way, please consider joining SVC-CAMFT as we do our part to promote mental wellness and reduce stigma. You may register here to be part of our team.   Look out for 5th Fridays- a fun, interactive networking opportunity for therapists serving the Sacramento Valley. SVC-CAMFT will host the first event at Punch Bowl Social on May 29, 2020 at 6:30p. Did I mention SVC-CAMFT is turning 50? Stay tuned because SVC-CAMFT is doing something new.

Lastly, we need YOU!! Please consider volunteering with SVC-CAMFT. We have two vacant board positions: Membership Chair and Sponsorship Chair.  Also, those who volunteer at a workshop are able to attend the workshop for free.  Any and every effort to help sustain our chapter is greatly appreciated. Please contact our Volunteer Chair: Carolyn Nelson at volunteerchair@svccamft.org

Be well,

Linita Morrris, LMFT

SVC-CAMFT President

News from the BBS

FROM THE BBS:

‘OLD’ LMFT AND LPCC SUPERVISED EXPERIENCE CATEGORIES (OPTION 2) EXPIRE DECEMBER 31, 2020 Are you gaining hours of supervised experience toward LMFT or LPCC licensure? If so, there is an important deadline approaching at the end of 2020. Senate Bill 620 (Chapter 262, Statutes of 2015) streamlined the categories of experience hours that qualify for licensure. The legislation allowed the prior set of experience categories to remain available, but only until December 31, 2020. In order to qualify under the “old” set of categories (Option 2), an Application for Licensure must be postmarked no later than December 31, 2020. Otherwise, the applicant must fully qualify under the new set of categories (Option 1). Note: There is no mixing and matching between categories—applicants must fully qualify under the new set of categories (Option 1, no deadline) or fully qualify under the old set of categories (Option 2) by the deadline. For more information on the two options, please see the following: • Frequently Asked Questions for MFT Trainees and AMFTs. • Frequently Asked Questions for APCCs.

Workshop Information:

Sex is something that many therapists feel uncomfortable discussing. This is despite the fact that it is a part of a client's broader understanding of themselves which is often interwoven with mental health challenges. In this two-hour workshop we will consider how our own attitudes around sex, sexuality and physical intimacy- may impact our work with clients. We will explore the ways in which sexuality is understood in cultural context and within psychology, psychotherapy and psychiatry –questioning the common approach of delineating ‘normal functional’ sexual expression from ‘abnormal, dysfunctional’ sexual expression and taking a look at the goal-focused view of sexuality and sexual challenges. We will consider ways of working across sexual diversity in an affirming manner (including LGBTQIA, heterosexual, and kink sexualities), as well as exploring how the sexual imagination of fantasy and desire is a helpful in a clinical setting – an often unexplored – way of coming to a more inclusive understanding of ourselves and our clients.
