Letter from SVC-CAMFT

February 1, 2020

Dear {Contact_FullName},

It's February and a good time to remember self-love by doing self-care.  As we walk through the stores with the red hearts everywhere, try to think about yourself as your own valentine.  Working in this field we often worry about the needs of others and not our own needs.  So this February celebrate you!  Arrange to go out to eat at a place you love, get a massage, take a hike in nature, do something you love or even read a book.  Give yourself some time for yourself - You ARE Worth It!

Our February workshop, The Adoption Journey and the Role of Mental Health Specialists by Jenenne Macklin,  aims to support providers in meeting the diverse needs of adoptive families. (Today is the last day of registration - so register now).

Access to adoption-competent mental health services is well-documented and vitally needed for families and children coming together through adoption in order to promote positive outcomes and the long-term success of adoptions.  Often clients come in for issues that at first do not seem to be related to adoption, but a deeper dive into the issues show a connection.  This specialized adoption competency workshop may influence one’s assessment protocols, diagnoses, treatment plans and interventions to better support the client on their healing journey.

Don't forget in the hour before the workshop starts we also will be having the 3000 club workshop: **Free** Pre-Licensed 3000 Club Workshop - Law and Ethics JEOPARODY!

In March while we will not have any workshops, SVC-CAMFT is pleased to announce our 3rd Annual Mental Health Professionals Job Fair!  Not only are there going to be many job opportunities and employers there, it is a great time to network and learn about resources.  We hope to see you there.

News from the BBS

FROM THE BBS:

Graduating on or After January 1, 2020? Make Your Hours Count!
A new law* will affect individuals graduating on or after January 1, 2020. These applicants may only count post-degree hours of experience gained under the “90-day rule” if the workplace required the applicant to complete Live Scan fingerprinting prior to gaining those hours.

“Graduating on or after January 1, 2020? Make your hours count! Keep a copy of your employer-required Live Scan Fingerprint Form to count postdegree hours.

What is the “90-day rule”?The 90-day rule is a clause in the law that allows applicants for registration as an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist, Associate Professional Clinical Counselor, or Associate Clinical Social Worker (Associate), whose Associate application is received within 90 days of the qualifying degree award date, to count supervised experience gained during the window of time between the degree award date and the issue date of the Associate registration number.

How is this rule changing, and when?
Those who graduate on or after January 1, 2020 may only count post-degree hours of supervised experience gained under the 90-day rule if the workplace required the applicant to complete Live Scan fingerprinting prior to gaining post-degree experience hours. Post-degree hours may only be counted as of the date recorded at the bottom of the Request for Live Scan Service form.

What will be required of applicants?
Applicants must obtain a copy of their Request for Live Scan Service form and provide a copy to the Board when applying for licensure in order to count post-degree experience hours gained under the 90-day rule.

What happens if the applicant’s employer does not require fingerprinting, or if the applicant cannot obtain a copy of the completed Request for Live Scan Service form?
Post-degree experience hours gained during the window of time between the degree award date and the issue date of the Associate registration number will not count.

How can applicants ensure that they meet the new requirement?
Applicants must obtain a copy of their completed Request for Live Scan Service form from the employer and keep it in a safe place. The applicant must submit a copy of this form upon application for licensure. Other documentation cannot be accepted as the law does not allow for any alternatives.

Does this apply to MFT or PCC trainees?
The Live Scan requirement does not apply to trainees. However, if there is a possibility that a trainee will be continuing to work for the same agency after graduation, the individual will need to have been fingerprinted by that agency before they can count any post-degree hours under the 90-day rule at that agency. The fingerprinting may be completed while a trainee.

Presenter Bio:

Jenenne Macklin, MSW, LCSW is an author, a speaker and wealth catalyst. After many years as a social worker, clinical supervisor, and program director, she embarked on a journey of reconciliation with her past and planning for her future. Her professional training and a heart-calling urged her to consider a major life change: adoption.

It was at age 35 that Jenenne stumbled upon the family secret that she was adopted.  Her story isn’t so different from many others. With adoption having long carried a “soft stigma” filled with misunderstandings, it remains among the last choices for creating a family. And too often, keeping the secret has caused disruption in families when the secret was revealed.

Facilitating dialogues and workshops on the topic of adoption is important to and deeply personal to Jenenne. Only select groups have been privy to her personal story of being adopted and choosing to adopt an infant at 50 years old. It is her intention that attendees will be engaged in a meaningful dialogue and leave better prepared to provide mental/behavioral health services for adoptees and families who have welcomed or want to welcome a vulnerable child into their lives.
