Description

LGBTQIA+ clients frequently encounter mental health concerns that are directly influenced by experiences of stigma, discrimination, family rejection, and religiously based messages regarding sexual orientation and gender identity. Research consistently demonstrates that rejection and identity invalidation are associated with increased rates of depression, anxiety, self-harm, suicidality, substance use, relational distress, and trauma-related symptoms.

Drawing upon Kathy Baldock's Forging a Sacred Weapon, this training explores how specific theological interpretations have historically contributed to social and familial rejection of LGBTQIA+ individuals. Clinicians will learn to recognize the impact of spiritual trauma, religious harm, and attachment injuries while maintaining ethical sensitivity to clients' faith traditions, cultural backgrounds, and personal values.

The training incorporates current research on minority stress, family acceptance, attachment, and trauma-informed care. Particular attention will be given to the role of belonging and acceptance as protective factors for mental health. According to The Trevor Project's 2025 U.S. National Survey on the Mental Health of LGBTQ+ Young People, 36% of LGBTQ+ youth seriously considered suicide in the past year, approximately 1 in 10 reported a suicide attempt, and 40% of transgender and nonbinary youth seriously considered suicide. Importantly, LGBTQ+ youth living in highly accepting communities attempted suicide at less than one-third the rate of those living in highly unaccepting communities. These findings underscore the profound mental health impact of acceptance, affirmation, and supportive relationships.

One of the central themes of Forging a Sacred Weapon is that the greatest harm often arises not from LGBTQIA+ identity itself, but from the rejection, stigma, exclusion, and shame imposed by social, familial, and religious systems. The Trevor Project findings support this conclusion by demonstrating that suicide risk is strongly associated with experiences of victimization, rejection, and lack of affirmation, while supportive families and communities serve as significant protective factors.

Educational Goals

Participants will develop practical skills for assessment, treatment planning, intervention, and referral that support client well-being, strengthen family relationships, reduce minority stress, and promote resilience while remaining within professional ethical standards and scope of practice.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this presentation, attendees will be able to:

Analyze at least three historical, cultural, or theological factors discussed in Forging a Sacred Weapon that contributed to the weaponization of scripture against LGBTQIA+ individuals.
Identify at least three mental health consequences associated with family rejection, religious trauma, identity invalidation, and minority stress among LGBTQIA+ individuals.
Demonstrate the ability to apply at least three evidence-based, trauma-informed, and LGBTQIA+-affirming interventions when conceptualizing treatment plans for clients experiencing faith-identity conflict, spiritual trauma, family rejection, or religious harm.

Presenter(s)

Kathy Baldock, author, historian, researcher, LGBTQ advocate, international speaker and educator, and Executive Director of CanyonWalker Connections, is a leading expert on LGBTQ+ issues in the United States, especially dealing with historical and current discrimination faced from the socially conservative Christian church and political sector. Baldock is the author of Forging a Sacred Weapon: The 1946 Bible Mistranslation Behind Anti-Gay Theology and Walking the Bridgeless Canyon: Repairing the Breach Between the Church and the LGBTQ Community. Baldock is one of the researchers featured in the award-winning documentary 1946: The Mistranslation That Shifted Culture. She lives in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, outside Reno, Nevada where she hikes with her dog, Finn twice a day, does yoga, reads lots of books and continues to ask hard questions and inviting others to do the same.

This is an introductory, intermediate, and advanced level course. This program will benefit LMFT, LPCC, LEP and LCSW licensees and pre-licensees. Open to all mental health professionals, both members and non-members.

This course meets the qualifications for 4 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. The Sacramento Valley Chapter of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (SVC-CAMFT), provider #62279, is approved by CAMFT to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and LEPs. SVC-CAMFT maintains the responsibility for the program and all its content.

CE credit will be awarded via email after the completion of the course in exchange for a course evaluation. No CE credits will be awarded to persons not attending the presentation in it's entirety. Partial CE credit will not be awarded.

Description

Psychedelic-Informed Care is a six-part workshop series designed specifically for California LMFTs who are increasingly asked to support clients curious about psychedelics, preparing to seek experiences elsewhere, or returning from psychedelic experiences. This is not a “how-to” or facilitation training. Instead, it provides practical, scope-appropriate tools for education, harm reduction, and clinical integration—with clear attention to current research signals and legal status; applicability across behavioral, trauma, psychological, and spiritual dimensions; multicultural considerations (including cultural context, appropriation, and exotization); and concrete risk, boundary, and ethical safeguards (e.g., spiritual bypassing, psychedelic exceptionalism, consent and power dynamics).

While each event stands alone and you must register for each separately, they are meant to be a "package" and build upon each other so, please register for all if you can!

Part III will specifically focus on clarifying your professional role in today’s evolving psychedelic field, building safe collaboration networks, and communicating accurately about integration work in clinical and public settings.

Educational Goals/Learning Objectives

At the end of this presentation, attendees will be able to:

Define an integration-focused LMFT role in the psychedelic landscape and list scope limits (what LMFTs do and do not do).
Develop a clear personal/professional stance on PAT and the LMFT role, consistent with an integration-only scope, client autonomy, and ethical practice.
Translate the series’ key concepts into a coherent, real-world approach that guides how you discuss, assess risk, set boundaries, and support integration when psychedelics arise in therapy.

Presenter

Dr. Sergio Rodriguez-Castillo (he/him) has over 20 years of experience in sacred medicine and a background spanning law, psychotherapy, and psychedelic-assisted therapy. Holding a Mexican JD and UK LLM, he practiced law for 12 years before shifting to psycho-spiritual studies in India (Sadhana Institute, Osho’s ashram, Ramakrishna Mission). He apprenticed for over a decade with a Mazatec curandera and leads groups in exploring Mexico’s sacred mushroom tradition. He holds master’s degrees in Integral Counseling and East-West Psychology and a Ph.D. focused on the training of psychedelic-assisted therapy. A licensed MFT, he has served as core faculty at CIIS, AMPYDET, and Protocol Q, mentored in CIIS’ PAT program, and is a MAPS MDMA-Assisted Therapy Practitioner and is a lead facilitator at Beckley Retreats. He teaches, mentors, and develops psychedelic therapy curricula. Specializing in personal, interpersonal and transpersonal transformation, existential growth, consciousness expansion, or simply put, helping people rediscover who they really are.

This 3-hour law and ethics webinar will delve into the more nuanced areas of gift giving and receiving within the context of the therapeutic relationship, explain updates to the BBS advertising regulations, and describe the elements that constitute ethical client termination. Each of these topics is unique and requires a clear and thorough understanding of the legal and ethical implications involved. This webinar will be informative in a way that helps participants formulate legally and ethically sound courses of action in dealing with each of these areas in their practice.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

Interpret the CAMFT ethical standards relevant to gift giving and receiving.
Asses when it is appropriate and/or inappropriate to either give and/or receive a gift during the therapeutic relationship.
Identify the updated BBS advertising regulations.
Apply advertising standards in alignment with all legal and ethical requirements.

Presenter

Alain Montgomery, Esq. is a member of the State Bar of California. Alain received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of California at Berkeley and a Juris Doctor degree from Thomas Jefferson School of Law. Prior to joining the CAMFT legal department, Alain worked in public interest law as a legal advisor for the Superior Court of California where he helped self-represented parties navigate the complexities of small claims litigation. As a member of the CAMFT legal department, Alain has served as part of the support staff for the CAMFT Ethics Committee and has represented the Association at various state regulatory board meetings. After graduating from college and before attending law school, Alain worked as a ski instructor at Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort.

Learn from CAMFT's expert attorneys in a Law and Ethics webinar series to support your practice.

This law and ethics-focused training is designed for mental health professionals who are paneled with insurance companies, considering becoming in-network, or seeing clients who wish to use out-of-network benefits. While insurance provides increased access to care, it also introduces complex legal and ethical obligations. During the training, Ms. Jasper will discuss how to fully inform patients about insurance issues at the outset of treatment, bill accurately and respond to records requests and audits in a manner that complies with state and federal confidentiality laws.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

Identify essential insurance-related disclosures that must be included in the informed consent process at the outset of treatment.
Implement informed consent procedures that fully notify patients about insurance issues and financial responsibilities at the start of treatment.
Execute accurate billing practices to ensure compliance with insurance company requirements and professional standards.
Identify common reasons for insurance record requests and audits.
Respond to records requests and insurance audits effectively while maintaining adherence to state and federal confidentiality laws, such as HIPAA.

Presenter

Sara Jasper, Esq., CAMFT Staff Attorney grew up in the Sacramento area. She graduated magna cum laude from California State University, Chico with a B.A. in Journalism. While attending CSUC, Sara Interned for Scripps Howard News Service in Washington, D.C. and served as an editor for the award-winning weekly student newspaper, The Orion. Sara attended The University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law where she served as a library research assistant to professors on campus. During law school, she also clerked for the California Judicial Council, Center for Children, Families & the Courts and for the National Center for Youth Law. Until she moved to San Diego last fall, Sara was on the Board of Directors for Sacramento Court Appointed Special Advocates (C.A.S.A.) and is a member of the State Bar of California. Prior to joining CAMFT, Sara worked at the private firm of Middleton, Young & Minney, LLP where she specialized in education and employment law. Sara also worked as the Legal Liaison and Administrative Officer in the Office of the Chief of Police for the City of Sacramento for three years. She assumed her role with the City of Sacramento's Police Department upon graduating from law school.
