The goal for the mental health (MH) professional is to improve clinical skills and application to power differentials in couple and family relationships. Specifically, the MH professional will be able to identify client markers that demonstrate power differentials and to understand how to position the self against power inequities, interrupt power processes towards relational safety, and practice new options toward shared responsibility. This requires the therapist to understand and acknowledge their ethical responsibility and role as a fulcrum of change.

Meets the qualifications for 2 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.  Sacramento Valley Chapter of California Marriage and Family Therapists (SVC-CAMFT) CAMFT CEPA CE Provider #62279 is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor Continuing Education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and LEPs. SVC-CAMFT maintains the responsibility for the program and all its content.  CE Credit will be awarded after the completion of the course via email in exchange for a completed course evaluation form.

No CEs will be awarded to persons arriving late or leaving early. Partial CE credit will not be awarded.

Workshop Information:

Power is relational. It is therefore critical for MH professionals to consider their ethical responsibility to recognize and intervene in power processes that inhibit these relationships, i.e., decoupling or familial dissolution. This requires the therapist’s self-awareness as well as acknowledgment of implicit biases that align with power differentials and directly affect the therapeutic relationship and process. The workshop is based on the theoretical and practice knowledge gained over 10 years and grounded in Attachment Theory, Social Constructionism, Feminist Theory, and Feminist Family Therapy. The participants in this workshop will acquire a basic understanding of how power imbalances influence relationships for the purpose of assisting clinicians in conceptualizing and clinically applying socially just therapeutic techniques associated with the Socio-Emotional Relationship Therapy practice of therapy.

Learning Objectives:

#1 *To develop an understanding of the role power plays in inhibiting couple and family relationships.

#2 *To develop an understanding of the pragmatic clinical concern requiring therapist advocacy and leadership/positioning as a fulcrum of change.

#3 *Participants will learn the basic tenets of Socio-Emotional Relationship Therapy (SERT) such as how to identify the Circle of Care as well as clinically intervene in power processes. Participants will also consider how this could apply to non-intimate relationships.
