News from the BBS

There are many law changes that you need to be aware of as a Board licensee, registrant, or applicant. While this document highlights some of the bigger changes, the Board highly recommends reading the bills referenced for greater clarity. The discussed changes become effective on January 1, 2019, unless otherwise noted.  (This is only a small portion covering only the Suicide Assessment Requirements - the whole document is located at https://bbs.ca.gov/pdf/legupdate_18.pdf)

Suicide Risk Assessment and Intervention Coursework

Effective January 1, 2021, applicants for licensure for each of the Board’s four license types (LMFT, LEP, LCSW, and LPCC), as well as all Board licensees (upon renewal), must have completed at least 6 hours of coursework or supervised experience in suicide risk assessment and intervention, as follows (This is a one-time requirement; see AB 1436 for further information):

Applications for Licensure Received on or after 1/1/2021:

The requirement must be met using one of the following methods:

• It can be obtained as part of the degree program. The applicant needs to provide the Board with a written certification from the registrar or training director of the school or degree program from which he/she graduated stating the required coursework was either required by the degree program or was part of the coursework completed by the applicant.

• It can be obtained as part of the applicant’s supervised experience. The applicant needs to provide the Board with a written certification from the director of training for the program, or from his or her primary supervisor, stating that the training was included in the applicant’s supervised experience.

• It can be obtained by taking a continuing education course from a provider that meets the Board’s continuing education provider requirements. The applicant needs to provide the Board with the course’s certificate of completion.

For All Existing Licensees (Effective First Renewal Period, Reactivation, or Reinstatement on or After 1/1/2021):

Upon the first renewal period occurring on or after 1/1/2021 (or upon reactivation or reinstatement on or after this date) an existing licensee must sign under penalty of perjury that he or she is in compliance with this coursework requirement via one of the three methods described above. The licensee does not need to submit proof (other than certifying under penalty of perjury) but does need to retain proof of the coursework or experience in case of a Board audit.

• In the coming months, the Board will be contacting in-state school programs to let them know that the new 6-hour requirement is coming. It will also be asking them, if already in their curriculum, to identify the course(s) it is located in.

Workshop Information:

We spend years learning to do good clinical work. And then we realize we need to learn marketing to get clients to treat in a private practice! What most therapy business owners do not fully understand is that it takes more than marketing and good clinical work to have a financially viable practice. There are actually 5 roles to becoming a successful therapy business CEO. Those roles are clinician, marketing, operations, finance, and visionary. (And there is a sixth role if you decide at add clinicians to your practice: HR.) When all the roles are active and operating well together, you have an easy to manage, and financially successful practice. In this day-long workshop, Casey Truffo will help you: * Find the role in your business that needs to be activated (This is often where the most benefit will be.) * Finally understand your business finances * Clarify policies and systems that will save you time and money * Help you decide which strategies to use to attract clients into your practice with more regularity * Learn how to assess the success of your business and know what to do 'next' for more ease and profit.

Morning Session #1: Review the 5 ingredients to a happy, healthy and wealthy therapy business Discuss the Visionary Role Discuss the Clinical Roles and taking a leadership role in the first session Q&A Morning Session #2: Discuss the Operations Role - policies and procedures Discuss the Marketing Role - speaking and community marketing Q&A Afternoon Session #1: Discuss fee increases Review a sample Profit and Loss Statement Discuss how to know how many sessions one needs to do to be profitable Q&A Afternoon Session #2: What is next? “How are your kids?”

by Heather Blessing, LMFT

It never fails, that someone will ask me that question.  My head floods with so many different answers and thoughts.  When was the last time I saw them?  How much did they know about my life?  How will they judge me.  How do I answer this simple question.  Recently, someone asked me and I was tired so I said, “good” and then they started rambling on “I am so glad, see I told you, you were freaking out about your daughter for nothing, what are they doing now, how old are they?”

Now what do I do?  I am cornered.  Do I correct their assumptions or do I just go along with it.  I say that my son is about to graduate from college and start to move away and act like I need to be on my way.  And then they ask, “And what about your daughter – cosmetology or fashion or something creative?”  Now I am stuck – they have stepped between me and my car door.  So I state “Currently she is in prison.”  There is a terrible silence.  It is terribly uncomfortable.  I am trying to decide whether I should ease their discomfort by saying something, but if so – what?  Then they say, “Oh I feel so sorry for you, how devastating.”  And they walk away quickly

I want to yell after them, it is ok, I am not devastated and actually much more relieved that she is in prison instead of homeless along the river, overdosing on meth.  I am not ashamed to tell people, but it really is a struggle to know how to tell anyone because most people get so uncomfortable upon hearing that my daughter is in prison, they cannot continue to talk about it so that I can actually explain that it isn’t the worst thing in the world.

My daughter had an unfair first 4.5 years of life.  Her birth mother trafficked her and abused her.  She struggles to find herself and falls easily to anything that makes her feel better.  Sadly that was meth.  I pushed the DA to prosecute her on her first felony.  It broke my heart and the DA did not understand and thought I was a terrible mother, but I knew I was trying to save my daughter’s life.  My daughter’s public defender, understood though and we worked together to try to get my daughter to accept help.  Unfortunately, my daughter had not hit rock bottom and she refused the help.  She got out of jail a few months later and started using meth again.  Her next felony sent her to prison.  This is a longer time and hopefully the more time she is away from meth, the more time she has to let her brain mature.  Prison to me is hope that maybe my daughter will start to heal.  No one sticks around to hear about the positives.  Who would think that such and innocent question of “How are your kids?” could be such a loaded question?
